A Second Look--November 4, 2015

Fall marches on. The trees continue to shed leaves with some bare after heavy rains last week and some have leaves that have just started to turn. The mums and pansies are surviving the occasional morning frost to add extra colors to the fall leaf palate.

The squirrels are busy and are seen more often now with a nut in their mouth as they scamper along. Also, I have seen the first junco which is one of the birds that comes to winter in this area.

Here are a few things I saw this week
during a Second Look,

  1. Gorgeous photos! I can't believe you have so many different flowers still in full bloom this late into the year! Is that usual in your climate?

    1. Mums and pansies are often in bloom this time of year. Mind you, they are fall flowers and usually can withstand a light frost. The verbena (red flower) just got lucky that it survived the several frosts. That was because it is close to the house. I have plenty of summer flowers that either stopped blooming as the weather got cooler, or died all at once with a frost.

Do you not have flowers that just bloom in the fall?

    2. I don't think so... at least not any that I've succeeded in keeping alive that long! :-) I tried planting some mums one year, but they all bit the dust, probably from lack of water - and I used to have some pansies, but I only remember them blooming in the early spring, not the fall. Hmmm...

    3. I like to plant pansies because they have bright color in both the fall and spring when they usually come back. I tried last year to keep them alive in the summer by planting them in the shade with lots of water. Didn't have any luck with that.

  2. Is your top picture of mums? Love the color. I have yellow and purple mums--the yellow have done well but the purple ones are a disappointment.

    1. Yes, they are mums that I purchased this year. I will put them in the ground in a week or two to see if they survive until next year. The rest of the mums you have seen are ones from previous years that I have done the same thing with.

    1. I have no magic in taking pictures. I have a point and shoot camera that has a lot of settings, but all except a couple of them start a movie recording. I've tried all kinds of things to fix that, but decided to just live with it. That limits what I can do.

However, I have learned over time to use different lights and distances to my advantage. But the biggest way I get such clear pictures is to not post the fuzzy ones. :)

  4. Your mums are making me green with envy! I brought my 2 plants into the house, hoping that would help them, but the buds just aren't flowering. Maybe not enough sun?

You mentioned seeing a rose at a friend's home, a few posts back. We get roses all the way to Thanksgiving here. Go figure. I can't grow mums, which are fall flowers, but I've got roses, which are supposed to be summer flowers.

    1. As I've mentioned before, it's hard to predict what a plant that has been forced into bloom for sale will do as time progresses. I guess I just got lucky with the purple one. I bought one that didn't have anything blooming and planted it into a big planter. Maybe that helped. It's not getting a lot of sun, so who knows?

Roses all the way to Thanksgiving? Wow. We won't have mums until Thanksgiving, but we will probably have pansies. They can withstand some cold weather fairly well. They will die back in the winter, but usually come back in the spring.

    1. Thanks for visiting, KB. The flowers are pretty, aren't they? I'm trying to enjoy them before they're gone and snow covers the ground.

  6. Very pretty! I am still cutting zinnias which should have been gone for a while now! Of course it was in the 80's today, so I guess that is why. I have a lot of sweaters waiting for appropriate weather.

    1. We're going to be part of your heat wave with highs in the 70's. However the weekend is going to be in the 40's. Maybe you will have sweater weather, too.

  7. Fall and spring are the best seasons to take a second look, because nature is changing so quickly. Beautiful flowers!

    1. I do a Second Look year round, but fall and spring are the times there are more interesting things to take pictures of for sure.
