Thankful Sunday--October 4, 2015

I am thankful for
clean gutters.

While we have several trees around, this oak fills up
the gutters faster than any of the others.
(See the gloomy skies. The rain is still lingering.)
We have been more fortunate than some because Hurricane Joaquin decided to go out to sea before it had much of an impact on us. However, we still have had very heavy rains for the last few days from another system. Because of this, one day last week at daybreak, Ward got on the roof and cleaned all of the gutters. Consequently, we had no water in the basement from the heavy rains. And for Ward and a dry basement, I am very thankful.

(Ward is researching gutter helmets as we speak.)

  1. I've been wondering how you have been faring through Joaquin! Glad to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Yes to clean gutters and dry basements!

    1. One of the downsides to the lovely trees we have is how often we have to clean their leaves out of the gutters. Ward cleans them four times a year--more often would be better. I am very happy that this a chore he doesn't mind doing because there's no way I'm getting on the roof to do it.

  2. Good for him. Can he come clean mine now?

    1. I think he would do it if you lived a little closer.

  3. So glad you're all safe from Joaquin! I've gotta get out there and clean the gutters pretty soon - I promised myself that I'd be better about cleaning the gutters this year. I've got a honey locust tree which has those tiny leaves... which are known for slipping through even the best gutter helmets!

    1. I've heard mixed reviews on gutter covers based on the kind of stuff you're trying to keep out. We have a variety of sizes of debris including small, so potentially they might not work for us. But we are going to do some more research.

  4. Glad you were not blitzed by Joaquin. We live with trees and long leaf pine straw, so gutters are a constant issue. Our gutters are 3 stories high, so neither TheHub nor I will climb on the roof to clean them. It means we have to hire them done a couple of times a year. We don't have the cadillac of gutter covers, and still get a little debris, but nothing like we had in the past when they were open. From our experience the mid grade covers work ok, but the super ones our neighbor has are fantastic. We probably should have gone ahead and installed the really good ones, but we always make perfect decisions after the fact.

    1. Thanks for the input. We pretty much usually get the mid priced stuff also. Do you know the brand of the really good ones your neighbor has? Ward wants to know.

  5. I don't know but I will ask her. She is out of town right now so it will be a few days.

  6. Another neighbor has the same thing and told me the name. Leaf Filter. I am unsure if it is one word or 2

    1. Much appreciated. With a name like that, it should do the job, shouldn't it?
