Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl and Jo at Simply being Mum encourage us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions. Occasionally, if our eating is going okay, I'll talk about some other food topic.

This Week's Food Waste

Mystery Meat

I've been trying to use up things in the freezer, so I decided it was time to get out a piece of meat that's been in there for a while. Oddly, it wasn't labeled but I thought when it thawed, we'd figure that part out. I told my carnivorous husband that he had a piece of meat to cook for supper and I'd have something else. When he got ready to cook it, he said it was a chicken leg that he didn't like the looks of and didn't want to eat it. Well, we certainly don't want to eat bad meat here, so out it went. However, as I was handling it again, I figured out that it was the innards of a chicken. and it would have been just fine to make a broth with even though we don't like to eat organs. That is if we'd only figured that out before it had spent much too long on the counter.  :( Now, I don't know how it ended up in the freezer without a label, but I'm going to claim that someone else did that. Because you know, that I never make mistakes or at least that's what I tell my family. :)

This Week's True Food Confessions

Imagine that you're also seeing meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, chicken salad,  and pizza

It's week three in our renewed efforts to have more control over meals and all is well--meaning I don't feel guilty when I think about what we've been eating.  This week I had a plan, (wait, yes, I did say that I had a plan!) and after a week of good home cooked meals, we're going to have a nice supper of leftovers tonight.

Until next time...

  1. Yay June! Good job with the meals. I'm feeling pretty good about meals, myself, now that I have chicken stew in the crockpot and soda bread out of the oven ... if only I could keep my cat (who thinks he is starving!) out of it! These days, I put masking tape over my crockpot lid, and I've had to find a high home for the bread. Is my cat weird, or what????

Ah, mystery freezer packages. In my house, it usually IS my hubby's fault when freezer containers aren't labeled. It makes me crazy, but since he cooks the big meals on Saturday and Sunday, I try to not do too much complaining.

    1. Your cat takes the lid off your crock pot? I have a heavy glass lid. What kind do you have? Does your cat do this mischief when you aren't looking? I like to say that my cats are well behaved. However, all I can say is that they are well behaved until I turn my back.

    2. Well .... I'm not sure. I came home to a somewhat ajar crockpot lid last winter. It may have been my fault, but I've caught the cat on the countertop by the crockpot, so I've decided not to take chances. My niece has a cat and she puts her crockpot into her bedroom and shuts the door to run it because she's caught her cat being naughty. I've decided it's better to over-prepare for trouble than to either lose my dinner or have a burned cat. I have 2 crockpots--my old one is an 80's style, with a heavy glass lid. My new 6 quart crockpot has a lighter lid--not sure if it's glass or some sort of composite material.

My cat is about 6 years old. He was very good for the first 4 years and he has been steadily getting worse, behavior-wise, since then. The vet had me put him on a diet a couple of years ago--which was successful and he's now in a healthy weight range--but he's constantly looking to supplement his diet. He likes bran flakes ... insects ... I've caught him licking out chili bowls ... it's kind of annoying but he's also very sweet tempered, allows my kids to haul him all over the place, and is a lap cat, so we just deal with it. I AM toying with getting a "scat mat", though.

    3. Our cats have learned that if we set a bowl or dish on the floor, they can lick it. They never get much, but are always on watch to hear the spoon scrape the bowl. Then they're like vultures. But that's not to say they I haven't caught them on the counter but not too much. I wonder sometimes why we let them get away so much, but there is something about a purring cat. I always say that it's a good thing that my kids never got away with as much as my cats do.
