A Second Look--April 16, 2014

We had a warm weekend which encouraged a lot of plants to make an appearance. Among them were several different kinds of daffodils. I'm trying once again to remember how many varieties we have and so far I've counted five. The daffodils were all already planted when we moved here, and I can never seem to keep track of them.

Unfortunately as I write this, it's sleeting and snowing outside. I hope some of the plants didn't make an appearance too soon.

Here's what I saw this week during a Second Look.

Here's today's poem by Robert Frost.

A Prayer in Spring

Robert Frost

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which  it only needs that we fulfil.

  1. I haven't read that poem before. Beautiful.

    Our daffodils were close to blooming on Saturday, and then we had thunderstorms which changed to a 2 or 3 inch snowfall, so I haven't checked on them since--but they've always been pretty hardy in the past, so let's hope for the best! LOVE daffodils! :)

  2. I think you're daffodils should be fine unless they were near the end of their blooms anyway. I too love daffodils. One for their beauty and two because the deer don't eat them.

    1. I don't recognize the purple flowers--what are they? So pretty.

      The other reason I love daffodils is because they return every year. I only get 1-2 years out of tulip bulbs, so I am no longer going to plant them, even though I love them.

    2. The purple flowers are simple violets. Wild flowers or weeds depending what your perspective is. I have always loved them.

      I have one tulip that comes up every year. The rest have never lasted very long which is very disappointing.

  4. Our daffodils aren't quite read to bloom only the leaves are up and it's probably a good thing because they are now covered in snow. We did find our first skull though before it snowed, first I've ever found here. It was the head and beak of a duck.

    1. A duck. Now that's interesting. I don't have any living close to me because I'm not around any water. However, we do have geese sometimes and I have found a couple of their eggs.
