Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Feb. 21, 2014

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions. I bought a bag of lettuce before I was called out of town and it didn't survive until I got back. Disappointing, but understandable.


This Week's True Food Confessions


 We did reasonably well this week with our food management. The only thing I would have done differently was not buy the very expensive roasted brussel sprouts from the grocery store deli. They were good, but no better than what we make at home. That's what happens when you go to the store tired and hungry.

One of the highlights of the week was the spinach quiche we had. I'll post the recipe soon. Now I have to get ready for work.

  1. The quiche looks delicious. Too bad I have a picky 10--year-old son. He will eat raw spinach (we're working quickly through a bag before it goes bad--I swear that spinach multiplies exponentially as soon as you open it) but cooked? Highly unlikely.

    1. Overall, spinach has a fairly mild flavor, so I put it into a lot of things for added nutritional value like chili, meatloaf, etc. Have you ever tried it cooked that way? I do know that cooked spinach can have a slimy texture sometimes and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't like that. However, I find that frozen chopped spinach avoids this problem. But it doesn't matter. He likes it raw. Good for him.

    2. Umm, if I were to list his top 5 most hated foods, meatloaf would be at the top ... chili is about 3rd or 4th ... I think he doesn't like those mixed textures. So ... I adapt. He has to take a couple of bites of whatever the main course is and then can fill up on other healthy stuff (remember when I told you we eat a lot of cottage cheese around here??). I want him to choose to eat healthy food when he's an adult and so I try to avoid alienating him from food now. I don't care what form he eats it in as long as he DOES eat it. :)

    3. One of my kids had a lot of texture issues with food. For example, he always said he didn't like spaghetti when he was younger. I didn't worry much about it because everyone has food preferences. However, several years later I found out that it was the texture of the long spaghetti noodles that he didn't like. When different shaped pasta was used, there was no problem. Who knew?

      Sounds like you son (and family) are eating pretty well. No need to worry at your house in that area.
