Food Waste Friday and True Food Confessions--Dec. 6, 2013

It's time for Food Waste Friday, when the Frugalgirl encourages us to post pictures from the previous week of wasted food from our household. This accountability hopefully will help us to be more careful with our food and maybe save some money. Also, I am using this public forum to encourage us to eat out less which includes better meal planning. You can follow how we are doing in this endeavor by reading True Food Confessions.

This Week's Food Waste

Pineapple

There was a can of pineapple that got shoved to the back of the refrigerator and lived there until we discovered the smelly contents. Turns out the can has quite a complex history involving three households, brisket, and 1 1/2 months of time. Ask Ward about it sometime if you want to know the complete story.

This Week's True Food Confessions

Look! I did actual cooking this week in the new kitchen. During the refrigerator clean out, I made some tasty vegetable soup to go with the homemade whole wheat bread. I'm not sure what we ate the rest of the week, but it paled in comparison to this meal. :)

And speaking of new kitchens and construction, we're so close to the end of it, I can almost taste it (pun intended). The work on the living room floor SHOULD be done on Monday with another week and a half of floor curing before we can move everything back in. Yea!

The work continues.

    1. Thanks. I am hoping not to move everything back in, but some things we need because we use them a lot. We'll see.

    1. The bread didn't rise very well, but it still tasted good.

  3. Your house is looking good! Too bad about the pineapple. Oh well, things happen (like a house under construction). Vegetable soup is one of my favorite meals!

    1. I love vegetable soup. When I was growing up, we canned vegetable soup using veggies that we grew and beef that we butchered. It was the best!

  4. Soup and homemade bread is my favorite winter meal. I have stew in the crockpot now and am plotting which bread I want to bake for supper. Yum!

Your house is looking better and better!

    1. Some would call the soups that I make stew. I tend to like them on the thicker side. We had the last coat of finish put the floor this morning. Now I'm trying to figure out where to put the Christmas tree. I don't think we're going to be able to use the living room like most years. How is your work coming along?

    2. I like soup thicker, too. We're definitely having soup weather here! Cold and snowy.

We still need to paint--I spent the week buying paint, getting the glass inserts for our cabinets, putting away more kitchen items (is there ever an end to them???) and, to make my week more fun, trying to get the tree up and start decorating for Christmas. I really would rather forget about Christmas decorating but that would not go over well with my kids! I feel like I'm finally getting to the bottom of kitchen boxes and now I'm sorting through Christmas boxes. Oh well, it's a season and it will pass. Hoping our contractor can come back next week and do the finishing touches.
