A Second Look--July 31, 2013

Here's what I saw this week during a Second Look.

While some tiger lilies are still blooming, many are dropping their petals as you can see behind and to the right of this one.

The hydrangea are still going strong.

These two begonias were both yellow when they were planted. However, the one on the right was exposed to more sun and turned orange.

While some day lilies are done blooming, a few colors are still making a show.

The ever-faithful spirea.

These celosia are all volunteers from last year.

One of the sparrow eggs has hatched. When this baby first hatched yesterday, it had no down on it. I have seen a lot of growth in just 24 hours

I found four more eggs in the bluebird nest. That makes three clutches in one season. This is an unusual but not an unheard of occurrence.

  1. So many lovely colours - including the bluebird eggs :) It must be so interesting watching the baby birds grow up.

    1. I find it interesting when the parents let me take a peek. As I have mentioned before, some of the parents are quite protective of their young.

  2. Love the close ups of the bird nests. Today I was working outside and happened upon a snake's nest. While trying to consider how I could get what I needed without disturbing their home I spotted a total of 7 snakes, 3 different varieties all in one location. Unfortunately, I disturbed them but I know I left enough wild areas for them to find a new home.

    1. That's very interesting that there were three different kinds of snakes in one area. None of them were copperheads were they?

I see snakes occasionally and have even had them in my house and garage, but I have never found a nest.

    1. Hi Ergenic,
Tiger lilies are originally from Asia, but are quite common around here(eastern US). What part of the world are you from?

  4. You have so many beautiful flowers on your property! I guess I just have to be content with lots of green.

    1. I do have a lot of beautiful flowers. Sometimes it's hard to see them among the weeds, but I try all the same.
